Performing arts

How can performing arts enhance awareness raising processes?

Performing arts are a tool that enable communities and vulnerable groups to take part in participatory processes, express their own messages, raise awareness on sensitive topics and advocate for the needs of their peers and of their own communities.

What are performing arts?

Performing arts are art works that imply an action that happens between two groups: the performers (or the participants) and the audience. This action creates a relationship that take place in the social sphere. Performing arts are a tool generating a changing, transformative experience for those involved.

Performing arts can include theatre, music, dance, video art, photography, plastic arts and other disciplines displayed though a performance or live action. They are often highly innovative and can take place in public venues and everyday life spaces, reaching target audiences while intercepting passers-by and unexpected audiences.

They are never “exclusive” but rather they are inclusive. Everyone willing to take part can be led through a creative experience by a qualified professional and find his/her role in a performance.

What are the benefits of participatory creative processes?

  • They act on three levels: the individual, the group (participating in the creative process) and the social (the audience attending the performance)
  • At the individual level, creative processes are a way to enable empowerment, self-esteem and trust
  • At the group level, there is a high potential for the improvement of the psychosocial wellbeing of the participants
  • Performance arts can have a high social impact as both an awareness raising tool and social inclusion tool
  • Performance arts are accessible: They can overcome social and educational differences
